An unstable atom decay and become stable, for this stability the atomic nuclei releases energy in the form of radiation. This radiation is known as ionization radiation and causes the atom to change into a charged ion. This decay causes for the stability of atoms.
When an unstable nucleus try to become stable by the emission of radiation then the atom is known as the radioactive atom. In this decay the number of protons changes in the atoms for the balancing and the stability of atoms.
