Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The subatomic particle discovered by researchers working with cathode ray tubes.
Concept introduction:
Cathode ray tube was an experiment by J. J. Thompson in which he had constructed a glass tube from which much air was pumped out. High electrical voltage between two electrodes was applied at one of the ends of the tube. Soon, a ray was coming out of the negatively charged cathode to positively charged anode. It was called cathode ray and the whole experiment was named as cathode ray tube.

Answer to Problem 48A
The scientist had discovered the electron, a negatively charged subatomic particle through cathode ray tubes.
Explanation of Solution
Cathode-ray tube: In this experiment by J. J. Thompson, the ray that are stream of particles, had originated from the cathode and traveled to the anode as they had negative charge. The bend towards positively charged plates demonstrated the negatively charged nature of electrons.
The electron was discovered in the cathode ray tube experiment.
