Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for the deflection of alpha particles in Rutherford’s gold foil experiment needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Alpha particles are positively charged particles.

Answer to Problem 52A
Atom consists a tiny, dense, positively charged core called a nucleus which caused the deflection of alpha particles in Rutherford’s gold foil experiment.
Explanation of Solution
The deflection of alpha particles in Rutherford’s gold foil experiment was caused because it encountered with nucleus present in the atoms of gold. Like charges repels each other, alpha particles are positively charged particles and nucleus present in atoms are also positively charged and heavy particle. Due to which when alpha particles encountered with nucleus inside the atom of gold it caused the deflection of alpha particles.
Alpha particles deflected due to collision with positively charged and heavy particle present in atoms know as nucleus.
