Concept Introduction:
Boiling point is the temperature at which liquid starts boiling and convert to gas at atmospheric pressure.
The boiling point depends on the strength of intermolecular bond. Stronger the bond, higher will be the boiling point.
Explanation of Solution
Alkanes are straight chain hydrocarbon compounds while cyclic hydrocarbons are ring structures. Both have London dispersion forces as intermolecular forces. Cyclic hydrocarbons are ringed structure thus, they have more surface area for bonding. Hence, they have stronger intermolecular forces.
Therefore, the cyclic hydrocarbons with same number of carbon atoms have higher boiling points than that of alkanes.
