Interpretation:
The two products formed needs to be determined, when fructose is reduced and the products should be labeled as stereoisomers, constitutional isomers or anomers.
Concept Introduction:
When an aldose sugar is treated with H2 in the presence of Pd catalyst, the carbonyl group is reduced to primary alcohol. This alcohol is known as alditol. Likewise, 2-ketohexoses also can be reduced by reacting with H2 in the presence of Pd catalyst. The H2 molecule is added across the C=O double bond, producing a secondary alcohol.
