Chapter 11.8, Problem 2ET
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The probability that a second child of a mother will suffer from Duchene Muscular Dystrophy as her first child (son) is suffering from this disease. She took a DNA test where it was confirmed that she is a carrier for this disease.

Introduction:

Duchene Muscular dystrophy is caused due to progressive muscle weakness and degeneration in muscles. It is an X-linked recessive disease. It is caused due to a defect in the synthesis of a gene dystropin which causes the weakness in muscles of hands and legs in the body. The body muscles get degraded and get filled with connective tissues and fats.

PKU is an inherited disease caused by a recessive allele. If a woman and her husband, who are both carriers (heterozygotes) for the disorder, have three children, what is the probability of each of the following? a) All three children are of normal phenotype. b) All three children have the disease. c) Any 2 of the three children have the normal phenotype.
A color-blind man marries a woman with normal vision whose father was color-blind.  Remember that color-blindness is an X-linked recessive trait. Hint: see figure 12.7 in book.
