Given information:

Freshmen	x	48
Sophomores	60	y

Calculation:

Let number of boys be ( $x+60$ ) and number of girls be ( $48+y$ )

According to question,

In freshmen, $x-4=48$   -(1)

And in sophomores, $60=y+4$   -(2)

Solving the given equations, taking (1)

  $x=48+4$

So,

  $x=52$

Taking (2),

  $y=60-4$

So,

  $y=56$

Total strength of freshmen= $x+48$

  =52+48

  =100

Total strength of sophomores= $y+60$

  =56+60

  =116
