Interpretation: The rules used for naming ionic compounds are to be stated. The purpose of each rule needs to be explained.
Concept Introduction: Ionic compounds are chemical compounds formed by the complete transfer of electrons between a metal and a non-metal. They are held together by the electrostatic force of attraction between the oppositely charged ions.
Answer to Problem 95A
The rules for naming ionic compounds are:
- The name of the cation is written first, followed by the anion.
- When there are two or more of the same polyatomic ion in the formula, that ion is written in parenthesis, with the subscript written outside the parentheses.
Explanation of Solution
Rules are set for the naming of ionic compounds to have uniformity in naming globally. Basically in nomenclature less electronegative elements are written before elements with higher electronegativity. In ionic compounds cations are electropositive, hence their name is written first followed by that of an anion.
