Answer to Problem 90A
W, tungsten has the highest melting point and has half filled d orbital, mercury, Hg has lower boiling point and has full s and d orbital.
Explanation of Solution
The elements which orbital are half filled that elements have a higher melting point and stable. There is relation between solubility of substance and its melting point. To achieve most stable configuration d block elements can promote electrons from s block. In the period six, element W, tungsten has the highest melting point and have half filled d orbital. To give tungsten a half full shell, two electrons are promoted from s orbital to p orbital. Repulsive forces reduce the stability of elements and lower the melting point, as the number electron in orbital increases. Mercury, Hg has lower boiling point and has full s and d orbital.
The elements with half filled orbitals have a higher melting point and stable. Mercury, Hg has lower boiling point and has full s and d orbital. W, tungsten has the highest melting point and has half filled d orbital.
