Interpretation:
The general characteristics of metalloids need to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Metalloids are the elements which contain characteristics of both metals and non-metals. Metalloids are present in group 13 to 17 of the periodic table. Some examples of the metalloids are boron, arsenic.
Answer to Problem 30A
Characteristics of metalloids are hard, malleable, ductile, brittleness, good conductors of electricity etc.
Explanation of Solution
Metalloids contain properties of both metals and non-metals. Metalloids are shiny and brittle. They are hard and good conductors of electricity. They are ductile, that is, they can be stretched into thin wires and malleable, that is, they can be drawn into thin sheets. Out of these properties, only brittleness is the property of non-metals. All other properties are of metals.
The properties of metals present in metalloids are shiny, hard, malleable, ductile, good conductors of electricity and property of non-metals present in metalloids is brittleness.
