Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Whether the first statement and second statement is correct or not needs to be determined and whether the second statement is the correct explanation for the first statement or not needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Rutherford conducted scattering experiment of alpha particles. When a beam of alpha particle is allowed to pass through a gold foil, some particles were seen to deflect back. Rutherford concluded that the atoms with positive charge are located centrally in the nucleus and the electrons in the atoms are binded by attractive forces.
Answer to Problem 16STP
The first statement is true and the second statement is false. Also, second statement is not the correct explanation for the first.
Explanation of Solution
The first statement is given that some particles bounce off the gold foil. Rutherford in his experiment found that some particles were deflected from the gold foil, while most particles passed through it. Hence, the first statement is true.
The second statement is given that the nucleus is negatively charged. Some particles from the gold foil deflected through small angle and some through large angles. Rutherford on the basis of properties of the alpha particles concluded that the atoms with positive charge are located centrally in the nucleus and the electrons in the atoms are binded by attractive forces. Hence, second statement is false.
On the basis of Rutherford experiment, we can conclude that fist statement is true and the second is false and second statement is not the correct explanation for the first.
