Concept introduction:
Carbon atoms in aliphatic compounds are linked in a straight manner while carbon atoms in aromatic compounds are linked in a ring structure.
Answer to Problem 14STP
Aliphatic compounds have straight linkage, while aromatic compounds have a ring linkage structure. On burning, aromatic compounds produce a sooty flame while aliphatic compounds does not.
Explanation of Solution
The linkage in aliphatic compounds is done in a straight line but in aromatic compounds the linkage is done in a ring structure by taking the help of conjugated pi electrons. Aliphatic compounds do not produce a sooty flame on burning but aromatic compounds produce a sooty flame. Aliphatic compounds have unpleasant odor while aromatic compounds have a pleasant odor.
Example of aliphatic compounds are butane, methane, heptane etc. and examples of aromatic compounds are naphthalene, benzene etc.
Aliphatic and aromatic compounds can be differentiated in terms of carbon linkage, odor, flames on burning etc.
