Out of the compounds
Concept Introduction:
In any polar covalent bond, the difference in electronegativities gives rise to partial positive and negative charges respectively on the cation and anions. Ionic character of a polar covalent bond is determined on the basis of difference in electronegativities. If the difference exceeds 2, the compound is regarded as predominantly ionic otherwise it is primarily covalent.

Chemical Principles: The Quest for Insight
- Like several other bonds, carbon-oxygen bonds havelengths and strengths that depend on the bond order. Draw Lewis structures for the following species, and arrange them in order of increasing carbon-oxygen bond length and then by increasing carbon-oxygen bond strength: (a) CO; (b) CO₃²⁻; (c) H₂CO;(d) CH₄O; (e) HCO₃(H attached to O).arrow_forward(a) Determine the formal charge of oxygen in the following structure. If the atom is formally neutral, indicate a charge of zero. (b) Draw an alternative Lewis (resonance) structure for the compound given in part (a). Show the unshared pairs and nonzero formal charges in your structure. Don't use radicals. Formal charge on O 0arrow_forwardAcetylene 1C2H22 and nitrogen 1N22 both contain a triplebond, but they differ greatly in their chemical properties.(a) Write the Lewis structures for the two substances. (b) Byreferring to Appendix C, look up the enthalpies of formationof acetylene and nitrogen. Which compound is more stable?(c) Write balanced chemical equations for the completeoxidation of N2 to form N2O51g2 and of acetylene to formCO21g2 and H2O1g2. (d) Calculate the enthalpy of oxidationper mole for N2 and for C2H2 (the enthalpy of formationof N2O51g2 is 11.30 kJ>mol). (e) Both N2 and C2H2 possesstriple bonds with quite high bond enthalpies (Table 8.3).Calculate the enthalpy of hydrogenation per mole for bothcompounds: acetylene plus H2 to make methane, CH4;nitrogen plus H2 to make ammonia, NH3.arrow_forward
- Write Lewis structures for the following: (c) C2F6 (contains a C¬C bond), (d) AsO3 3 -, (e) H2SO3 (H is bonded to O), (f) NH2Cl.. Arrange the bonds in each of the following sets in order of increasing polarity: (a) C¬F, O¬F, Be¬F; (b) O¬Cl, S¬Br, C¬P; (c) C¬S, B¬F, N¬O. What is the Lewis symbol for each of the following atoms or ions? (a) K, (b) As, (c) Sn2 + , (d) N3 Write electron configurations for the following ions and determine which have noble-gas configurations: (a) Cd2+, (b) P3-, (c) Zr4+arrow_forwardDraw the Lewis structure with lowest formal charges, and determine the charge of each atom in (a) IF₅; (b) AlH₄⁻arrow_forwardKeeping in mind that some elements violate the octet rule, draw a Lewis structure for each compound: (a) BeH 2; (b) PCl 5.arrow_forward
- The two compounds nitrogen dioxide and dinitrogentetraoxide are introduced in Section 3.13.(a) NO2 is an odd-electron compound. Draw the bestLewis diagrams possible for it, recognizing that oneatom cannot achieve an octet configuration. Use formal charges to decide whether that should be the(central) nitrogen atom or one of the oxygen atoms.(b) Draw resonance forms for N2O4 that obey the octetrule. The two N atoms are bonded in this molecule.arrow_forwardWhich statements are true about resonance contributing structures? (a) All contributing structures must have the same number of valence electrons. (b) All contributing structures must have the same arrangement of atoms. (c) All atoms in a contributing structure must have complete valence shells. (d) All bond angles in sets of contributing structures must be the same.arrow_forward19. :O: || :0-N- O: Which of the following statements, if true, would support the claim that the NO3 ion, represented above, has three resonance structures? (A) The NO3 ion is not a polar species. (B) The oxygen-to-nitrogen-to-oxygen bond angles are 90°. (C) One of the bonds in NO3 is longer than the other two. (D) One of the bonds in NO3¯ is shorter than the other two.arrow_forward
- For the next compounds/ions, draw two (2) appropriate Lewis structures. One structure must obey the octet rule and the other structure must be a non-octet obeying structure (octet deficient or octet expansion). Be sure to indicate which structure is the “best” structure and explain your choice formal charge arguments and any other points you deem important. (a) BeCl2 (b) POF3 (c) SO42−arrow_forwardIn addition to ammonia, nitrogen forms three other hy-drides: hydrazine (N₂H₄), diazene (N₂H₂), and tetrazene (N₄H₄).(a) Use Lewis structures to compare the strength, length, and or-der of nitrogen-nitrogen bonds in hydrazine, diazene, and N₂.(b) Tetrazene (atom sequence H₂NNNNH₂) decomposes above 0°C to hydrazine and nitrogen gas. Draw a Lewis structure fortetrazene, and calculate ΔH°ᵣₓₙ for this decomposition.arrow_forward(d) A substance has the molecular formula C4H,N. Is there any likelihood that this material contains a triple bond? Provide reasons.arrow_forward
