The relationship between vitamins and enzymes should be determined.
Concept introduction:
Vitamin:
It is an organic molecule which is essential in trace amounts and it cannot be synthesized in the body. It must be obtained from the diet.
According to the solubility, vitamins can be classified into two:
- Water soluble vitamin
- Fat soluble vitamin
Enzyme:
- It is a protein or a molecule which can act as a catalyst for a biological reaction.
- Does not affect the equilibrium point of the reaction.
- Active site of the enzyme is the region where the reaction takes place.
- Some enzyme requires cofactors for optimum activity and these can be small metallic ions or large molecules called coenzymes.
