Chapter 12, Problem 53A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reason for hydrogen bonds to be stronger than dipole-dipole forces needs to be explained.

Concept introduction:

Hydrogen bonds is bond of hydrogen with the electronegative element especially nitrogen, oxygen and fluorine. Dipole-dipole forces exist between any two polar molecules.

Answer to Problem 53A

Hydrogen bonds are stronger than all dipole-dipole forces because hydrogen bond is between highly polar molecules and therefore have stronger forces of attraction between their molecules.

Explanation of Solution

Hydrogen bond is formed between the most electropositive element hydrogen and with highly electronegative elements oxygen, fluorine and nitrogen and thus forms a bond with higher polarity and have greater forces of attraction between their molecules and In case of dipole-dipole forces bonding takes place between any two polar molecules which don’t have higher polarity and hence bond becomes weaker.

Conclusion

Hydrogen bonds are stronger than dipole-dipole forces due to its high polarity.
