Introduction:
Polydactyl is an autosomal dominant condition due to which the person has one extra figure in a hand or toe. In autosomal dominant condition, the dominant allele carries the diseased trait; therefore, the presence of single dominant allele in the genotype is sufficient to cause the autosomal dominant disease.
Mutation is the condition that causes alteration in the genome. The rate of mutation can be expressed in various ways such as mutation per gene, per locus, or per gamete. In the polydactyly condition, the mutant dominant allele is responsible for the diseased condition.

- A woman has her personal genome analyzed for the BRCA1 mutation after learning that her father is heterozygous and carries one mutant allele. What is her chance of inheriting the mutant allele from her father? 0: men cannot transmit genes affecting breast cancer. 25% 50% 75% 100% Among the progeny of a heterozygous round (Aa) x homozygous wrinkled ( aa) cross, three seeds are chosen at random. What is the probability that all three seeds are round? (1/4)3 1/4 (1/2) 3 1/2 A single gene can produce different proteins. True Falsearrow_forwardTuberous Sclerosis (TS) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease characterized by seizures, mental retardation, autism, and benign tumors of the brain, heart, skin, and kidneys. The kidney tumors can also be malignant. This disease exhibits a wide range of severity, and only about 1/3 of the cases are inherited. Two different genes have been tightly linked to the disease in families where it is inherited. The remaining 2/3 appear to be due to mutations in one of the 2 genes as well. Overall it appears that 1/2 are caused by mutations in TSC1 and the other half by mutations in TSC2. A rat model for hereditary renal carcinoma (kidney cancer) has been found. Southern and Northern blot analysis of the TSC1 and TSC2 gene revealed no differences between these rats and normal rats. Not all the rats in the strain would get cancer but a significant proportion did and those were selected for and used in experiments. 1. a) What was detected by the Southern blots? A man and woman in their late thirties have five children—three boys (ages 1, 3, and 10 years) and two girls (ages 5 and 7 years). The oldest, boy shows symptoms of the disease. What are the probabilities that their other children will develop the disease? Give only typing answer with explanation and conclusionarrow_forward
- Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is an X-linked recessive disorder in humans characterized by small teeth, no sweat glands, and sparse body hair. This trait is usually seen in men, but women who are heterozygous carriers of the trait often have irregular patches of skin with few or no sweat glands (see the illustration below). a. Explain why women who are heterozygous carriers of a recessive gene for anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia have irregular patches of skin lacking sweat glands. b. Why does the distribution of the patches of skin lacking sweat glands differ among the females depicted in the illustration, even between the identical twins?arrow_forwardFamilial retinoblastoma, a rare autosomal dominant defect, arose in a large family that had no prior history of the disease. Consider the following pedigree (the darkly colored symbols represent affected individuals): a. Circle the individual(s) in which the mutation most likely occurred. b. Is the person who is the source of the mutation affected by retinoblastoma? Justify your answer. c. Assuming that the mutant allele is fully penetrant, what is the chance that an affected individual will have an affected child?arrow_forwardA proband female with an unidentified disease seeks the advice of a genetic counselor before starting a family. Based on the following data, the counselor constructs a pedigree encompassing three generations: (1) The maternal grandfather of the proband has the disease. (2) The mother of the proband is unaffected and is the youngest of five children, the three oldest being male. (3) The proband has an affected older sister, but the youngest siblings are unaffected twins (boy and girl). (4) All the individuals who have the disease have been revealed. - A SNP marker is found linked to the cystic fibrosis gene. Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive disease. A couple plans to have children together and both are carriers for the cystic fibrosis gene but do not have the disease themselves. They are both A1/A2 at the SNP and the A2 allele is linked with the allele causing cystic fibrosis. Assuming no crossing over between the SNP and the disease gene, what genotypes in the offspring could result that would cause cystic fibrosis? During the course of your research you discover the a1 allele that contains a class IlI transposon insertion. Allele A is dominant to a1. - A woman who is heterozygous for gene B has brown eyes. B is a dominant allele for brown pigmentation, while b is recessive allele for blue pigmentation. The woman has a patch of blue color in her left eye. Give THREE (3) reasons how this might occur.arrow_forwardThe pedigree below shows the inheritance of a disease that is caused by a late onset, dominant, autosomal mutation that is rare, but only 50% penetrant. The gene that is mutated in the disease is linked at a distance of 10 cM to a microsatellite marker that has alleles numbered 1, 2, and 3. The marker alleles detected in each individual are indicated below the pedigree. 13 12 ? 12 A 22 32 32 B a. What is the probability that individual A will develop the disease? Explain you reasoning using an illustration of how this occurs. b. What is the probability that individual B will develop the disease? Explain your reasoning.arrow_forwardX‑linked, recessive diseases, such as hemophilia, are extremely rare in the population. However, many women are carriers and show no sign of the disease. The pedigree illustrates the inheritance of an X‑linked, recessive disease. Determine whether the unknown individuals are affected by the disease, unaffected by the disease, or carriers of the X‑linked recessive allele. Unaffected individuals are not carriers of the X‑linked recessive allele.arrow_forward
