Concept explainers
To analyze:
The question asked to define heteroduplex DNA and explain the reason behind the formation of heteroduplex DNA.
The question also asked to describe the relationship betweenheteroduplex DNA and gene conversion.
Introduction:
Transformation is led by the lysis, or damage, of a donor cell and the transfer of a fragmented genome from the donor chromosome. The receiver bacterial cell is able to up take double stranded transforming DNA.
The path of transforming DNA through the cell membrane and cell wall of receiver is complemented by the breakdown of one of the strands. The lasting strand of transforming DNA aligns with complementary section of the receiverchromosome

- What is the advantage for bacteria to have a circular DNA chromosome when eukaryotes have linear DNA chromosomes?arrow_forwardIn the Meselson-Stahl experiment on DNA replication, what fraction of the DNA was composed of one light strand and one heavy strand ("hybrid") after one generation of growth in medium containing 14N? After two generations of growth in a medium containing 14N? What fraction of hybrid DNA is expected after n generations of growth in a medium containing 14N?arrow_forwardWhat is proteinase K and what role does it play in DNA extraction?arrow_forward
- What are the steps of Homologous recombination during DNA repair?arrow_forwardConsidering prokaryotes, what is the enzyme that helps hold DNA polymerase III in place when nucleotides are being added?arrow_forwardSupercoiled DNA is slightly unwound compared to relaxed DNA and this enables it to assume a more compact structure with enhanced physical stability. Describe the enzymes that control the number of supercoils present in the E. coli chromosome. How much would you have to reduce the linking number to increase the number of supercoils by five?arrow_forward

- Two pathways, homologous recombination and nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ), can repair double-strandbreaks in DNA. If homologous recombination is an errorfree pathway whereas NHEJ is not always error free, whyis NHEJ used most of the time in eukaryotes?arrow_forwardWhat is the complete base composition of a double- stranded eukaryotic DNA that contains 22% guanine?arrow_forwardWhat is the importance of proteins for living beings?
