Homologous recombination is the universal phenomenon found in all domains of the life form. It is a genetic phenomenon which causes an exchange between two similar or identical molecules of DNA.

Homologous recombination takes place during meiosis to produce different combinations of gametes. Different species of bacteria use homologous recombination in horizontal gene transfer.
