Chapter 10, Problem 10.55P

The condenser of a steam power plant consists of AISI 302 stainless steel tubes ( k s = 15 W/m K ) , each of outer and inner diameters D o = 30 mm and D i = 26 mm, respectively. Saturated steam at 0.135 bar condenses on the outer surface of a tube, while water at a mean temperature of T m = 290 K is in fully developed flow through the tube.

(a) For a water flow rate of m ˙ = 0.25 kg/s. what is the outer surface temperature Tso of the tube and the rates of heat transfer and steam condensation per unit tube length? As a first estimate, you may evaluate the properties of the liquid film at the saturation temperature. If one wishes to increase the transfer rates, what is the limiting factor that should be addressed?

(b) Explore the effect of the water flow rate on T s , o and the rate of heat transfer per unit length.

A two pass steam surface condenser is to be designed to condense 10000 kg/hr of steam having an enthalpy of 2240 kj/kg. Condenser pressure is 13.79 kpa. circulating water enters the condenser at 25 C and leaves at 40 C. the outside and inside diameter for a water tube, OD=20 mm, ID = 17 mm and water velocity of 3 m/s. if the overall coefficient of the heat transfer is 14100 kj/hr-m-C of outside tube surface, determine the amount of circulating water in m/hr.
A freon 12 waste water system operating at 5 °C suction temperature and a 40°C condensing temperature has an evaporator load 17.6 KW. If the condenser is selected for a 70°C water temperature rises, how many gpm must be circulated through the condenser? The following enthalpies have been found; condenser entrance =377 kJ/kg; exitA=238.5 kJ/kg; evaporator entrance =238.5 kJ/kg; exit = 253.6 kJ/kg.
