The pressure which is exerted by the weight of the air above it at any point on the surface of earth is known as atmospheric pressure. The atmosphere supports a mercury column about 760 mmHg at sea level.

The formula which is used to calculate the height of column of water is:

  hH2OhHg=dHgdH2O

Where,

  hH2O = height of column in water.

  hHg = height of mercury.

  dHg = density of mercury.

  dH2O = density of water.
