Answer to Problem 7RQ
The primary difference between the removal of hydrogen by substitution and dehydrogenation reactions is that in substitution reactions, the carbon compound remains saturated while in dehydrogenation reaction, the carbon compound becomes unsaturated.
Explanation of Solution
In substitution reactions, the hydrogen is simply replaced by another atom, so the four single bonds remain intact and the compound retains its saturation. But in the case of dehydrogenation, the bond between carbon and hydrogen is removed and a pi bonding forms between the carbon atoms to compensate the removal of sigma bond and the compound becomes unsaturated.
