Chapter 20, Problem 22A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reason for alkanes being relatively unreactive is to be explained.

Concept introduction:

Alkanes are the saturated hydrocarbons which involve single bonded carbon atoms.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 22A

Because in alkanes, carbon atoms are joined by single bond.

Explanation of Solution

Alkanes have C-C and C-H bonds. Both the bonds are relatively strong bonds. These bonds are difficult to break. Thus at low temperatures, alkane are unreactive.

At very high temperature, alkanes react with some of halogens breaking carbon-hydrogen bonds and cracking of alkanes into its smaller alkanes.

Conclusion

Thus, alkanes are relatively unreactive hydrocarbons.
