Answer to Problem 56A

A polymer is a material which is made of a large number of subunits. Each subunit is called monomer.

Explanation of Solution

Polythene is an example of polymer. It is polymer of ethene. A number of units of ethene join together and forms polythene. Thus, ethene is monomer and polythene is polymer.

Polymers are of three categories:

  • Natural polymers
  • Synthetic polymers
  • Semi-synthetic polymers

Natural polymers are the polymers which are obtained in nature. Example: starch

Synthetic polymers are the polymers which are man-made. Example: Teflon

Semi-synthetic polymers are the polymers whose sources are natural and some modifications are done to improve the properties. Example: Vulcanised rubber

Conclusion

Thus, monomer combines in a large number to form polymers.
