Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The structure activity relationship should be determined for the given phosphorus oxides.
Concept Introduction:
Phosphorus: It is a most abundant element of group 5A according for 0.10% of the mass of the earth crust.
Phosphorus oxides: Two phosphorus oxides, phosphorus(III) oxide
Phosphorus(III) oxide: It is a white crystalline solid that smells like garlic and has poisonous vapour.
Reaction of Phosphorus(III) oxide: This oxy acid react with ice water to produce a solution of the weak acid
Phosphorus(V) oxide: It is a white flocculent power that can be prepared by heating elemental phosphorus in oxygen, it is very stable and poor oxidizing agent.

- Write Lewis structures for NF3 and PP5. On the basis of hybrid orbitals, explain the fact that NF3, PP3, and PP5 are stable molecules, but NP5 does not exist.arrow_forwardA mixture of xenon and fluorine was heated. A sample of the white solid that formed reacted with hydrogen to yield 81 mL of xenon (at STP) and hydrogen fluoride, which was collected in water, giving a solution of hydrofluoric acid. The hydrofluoric acid solution was titrated, and 68.43 mL of 0.3172 M sodium hydroxide was required to reach the equivalence point. Determine the empirical formula for the white solid and write balanced chemical equations for the reactions involving xenon.arrow_forwardExplain why the bond between B and Cl in the molecule BCl3 is shorter than would be expected for a single B—Cl bond.arrow_forward
- Calculate the pH and pOH of a solution of sodium hypoiodite Naol, with a formal concentration of 0.03801 mol L. Note that the compound is soluble, dissolves into sodium and hypoiodite ions, and these react with water. The pKa of hypoiodous acid at 298 K is 10.64. Calculate the pH and the pOH of the resulting solution. Use all the approximations you can, be sure to verify them. pH = pOHarrow_forwardSuppose 10.00 g of an alkaline earth metal reacts with 10.0 L of water to produce 6.10 L of hydrogen gas at 1.00 atm and 25 degree celcius.
