Chapter 29, Problem 10RQ
In the design of a water heater, the mean time needed for water molecules to stay inside the heat exchanger channels (based on the length of the channel and the average velocity of the flow) should be proportional to the time needed for water molecules in the center of each channel inlet to migrate to the channel surface by the outlet (based on convection and diffusion). Therefore, as the channel diameter decreases, what enables the heat exchanger to become smaller assuming that the same fluid velocity is used in all cases?
(HINT: based on the time scales involved.)

As a technologist, you are given the
following design task:
In a manufacturing environment, the final
product needs to be packaged and sealed.
After the product is placed inside the plastic
bag, a hot pressing die is to be used to seal the
plastic bag by application of heat and pressure.
The operation should be as follow:
By pressing a pushbutton switch, the
heating rail is advanced and the packaging
material is heated along the adhesive strip.
After the adhesion pressure has been reached, the heating rail must return to its start
position
The design specification includes the following:
Pressure dependent reversal with monitoring of the end position by means of magnetic
proximity switches.
Include safety measures, a green light to show when the system is ready, a red light when
system is in operation, a warning sound when the heating rail is moving.
1. Draw your pneumatic circuit design for this application.
2. Draw the electric circuit diagram for your design.
Calculate the heat capacity of liquid water per molecule, in terms of k. Suppose (incorrectly) that all the thermal energy of water is stored in quadratic degrees of freedom. How many degrees of freedom would each molecule have to have?
In 1907 a janitor called Murray Spangler put together a pillowcase. a fan, an old biscuit tin and a broom handle. It was the world's first vacuum cleaner_ One year later he sold his patented idea to William Hoover whose company wont on to dominate the vacuum cleaner market for decades. especially in its United States homeland. Yet between 2002 and 2005 Hoover's market share dropped from 36 per cent to 13.5 per cent, Why? Because a futuristic looking and comparatively expensive rival product, the Dyson vacuum cleaner, had jumped from nothing to over 20 per cent of the market. In fact, the Dyson produce dales back to 1978 when James Dyson noticed how the air filter in the sprayfnishing room of a company when; he had been working was constantly clogging with powder particles (just like a vacuum cleaner bag clogs with dust). So he designed and built an industrial cyclone lower, which removed the powder particles by exerting centrifugal forces. Thy question intriguing him was, could the…

- 1. Injection Molding The gate and runner system that you use to move plastic into an injection molding cavity are critical design parameters. Suppose the polymer material that you are using has a viscosity μ of 950Ns/m² under your processing conditions. Suppose your initial gate and round runner system is 3.5 mm in diameter and approximately 25 mm long. Your part has a volume of approximately 20000 mm³ and a projected area of approximately 1800 mm². Your Engel machine claims that it can melt and deliver material at a rate of 165 cm³/sec. Assume that there is no pressure loss between the mold cavity and the runner system, and none of the clamping force is lost in deforming the molds when they come together. (a) What is shortest injection time for the part?
