Expert Solution & Answer

Answer to Problem 16PSC

The volume of a hemisphere is 2 times the volume of a cone.

Explanation of Solution

Given Information:

Bases of the hemisphere and the cone are congruent i.e. d1=d2

  r1=h

Where, d1 is the diameter of the hemisphere

  d2 is the diameter of the cone

  "r1" is the radius of the hemisphere

  "h" is the height of the cone

Formula used:

Volume of a hemisphere (V)=23π(r1)3

  "r1" is the radius of the hemisphere

Volume of a cone (V')=13π(r2)2h

  r2andh are the radius and height of the cone

Calculation:

As d1=d2

  d12=d22r1=r2...(i)

And, r1=h … (ii)

We know that, Volume of a hemisphere (V)=23π(r1)3

  V=23πh3...Using(ii)

Also, Volume of a cone (V')=13π(r2)2h

  V'=13π(r1)2h...Using(i)V'=13π(h)2h...Using(ii)V'=13πh3

Hence, after comparing VandV' , we get that volume of a hemisphere is 2 times the volume of a cone.
