Concept explainers
Comparison of shape of the distribution of stem plots of acorns size for the Oak trees in two regions Atlantic coast and California.
Explanation of Solution
Given:The back to back stem plot display data of average volume of acorns of these 39 oak species where 28 grow in Atlantic coast and 11 grow in California as shown below
The smallest value for volume of acorns among 28 oak trees growing in Atlantic coast is 0.3 cm3 and largest value is 10.5 cm3. The distribution is skewed to right as there are more number of data points initially and tail is to the right and there are no outliers.
The smallest value for volume of acorns among 11 oak trees growing in California is 0.4 cm3 and largest value is 17.1 cm3. The distribution approximately looks symmetric. As you can see the gap between 7.1 cm3 and 17.1 cm3, we conclude that there is an outlier at 17.1 cm3.
