Question
Chapter 10.5, Problem 7E
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:Structural characteristics of a phase-transfer catalyst that allow it to be soluble in both organic and aqueous solvents should be specified.
Concept introduction:Certain compounds facilitate the transfer of reagents within immiscible layers via formation of ion pairs so as dissolve the polar parts of reagents and transfer them. These are called phase-transfer catalysts. This type of catalysis is known as heterogeneous catalysis.

Extremely thermophilic sulphur metabolizers.
2. A sample of material contains for its active components NaOH, NażCO3, NaHCO3, or compatible
mixtures of these. Two samples, each weighing 1.000 g, are dissolved in H2O. To one sample
phenolphthalein is added and the solution is titrated cold with 1.038 N acid, of which 17.96 mL
is required. The other sample is titrated cold, with methyl orange as indicator, and 21.17 mL
of the same acid is required. What alkalis are present, and what is the percentage of each in
the original sample?
Given the fact that ammonia is a weak base, should the extraction be carried out at a high or low pH to maximise the separation. Explain your reasoning in detail.
