Interpretation:The role of notation “E” in IUPAC name of stilbene and cinnamic acid should be determined.
Concept introduction:In order to determine the absolute stereochemistry in an olefinic system E and Z nomenclature is suggested. It is regarded as extended notation for cis-trans isomers.
In accordance with Cahn-Ingold-Prelog rules, each of the substituents attached to olefinic bond is denoted by some priority number. After the assignment of priorities if two high priority substituents happen to appear on same side of olefinic bond then absolute configuration would be “Z”.
