Chapter 10, Problem 7STP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The statement which is not true for molecular compounds needs to be identified.

Concept introduction:

Molecular compounds are formed by sharing of electrons between the atoms forming covalent bonds.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 7STP

C. All atoms have eight valence electrons when they are stable. Eight valence electrons from octet rule but in a few cases there are exceptions.

Example: Aluminium forms compounds where they get stable even with six valence electrons. Hydrogen has 2 electrons in its stable state.

Explanation of Solution

A. Triple bond strength is greater than single bond hence, triple bonds are stronger than single bonds.

B. Covalent bonds are formed when electrons are shared from each other whereas ionic bond is formed between cation and anion after complete transfer of electron from cation to anion.

D. Lewis dot structure represents arrangement of bonds pairs and lone pairs in a covalent compound.
