THE TWEETS ARE IN THE IMAGES Part 1: Analyze (300 words) The first part asks you to write a 300-word analysis of the attached tweets from Ford Canada (64,400 followers). There are no specific requirements for your analysis, but you might focus on any of the ideas we’ve discussed so far this semester, including: • Which rhetorical strategies are at work? • Are there any stylistic concerns? • Is the voice appropriate to the platform? • Are there any spelling, punctuation, or grammatical errors? • Does it make use of relevant graphical elements? • Does it use the characteristics of the platform effectively? • What are its general strengths and weaknesses? Your analysis should be written in full sentences and paragraphs but there are no other formatting requirements. *Remember that there is an important difference between summary and analysis. Summary simply states what the posts contain (don’t do this!). Analysis, by contrast, works to explain how the posts are composed and how they are successful (or not) at delivering their message (do this!). Focus on analysis, not summary. Part 2: Revise (nine sentences; roughly 200 words) The second part asks you to identify what you think are the three most important problems in these posts. • What would be the top three things you would focus on when revising the posts? • Why are those three most important? • How would you fix each one? For example (and this is just an example!), you might notice that the tweets are exclusively using ethos to persuade the audience and you think that including some pathos and logos would help make them more convincing. For each of the 3 key things you think should be edited, write three sentences: 1. one sentence identifying the problem 2. one sentence explaining why you think that problem is one of the most important to fix 3. one sentence showing or telling how you would fix the problem. For example (again: just an example!), you might write something like this for each of the three problems: Part 2: 1. The tweets only make use of ethos to persuade the audience. This is one of the most important problems to fix because using multiple rhetorical strategies is more effective than only using one. I would fix this by adding some pathos-based content such as “Ford vehicles safely get you and your family home,” or some logos-based content, such as “Last year, Ford sold 241,000 vehicles in Canada.” 2. Etc. 3. Etc. *Remember to focus on what you think are the three most important problems. If there is one misplaced comma, for example, is that a major problem? Probably not. But if there are repeated punctuation errors (misplaced commas, misused semi-colons, incorrect use of ellipses, etc.), then you could certainly identify punctuation errors as one of the three most important problems. *Please also remember to focus on the written aspects of the campaign’s communication. While graphical elements are of course important, our focus is largely on written communication Part 3: Rewrite (approximately 200 words?) Based on your analysis and revision in parts one and two, in this third part you are asked to rewrite the tweets below from Ford Canada. Focus on improving the problems you identified in part two and addressing any other concerns you might have about how the tweets deliver their messages. While you’re welcome to move and modify visual and graphical elements, please keep your focus on the written communication. Your goal for this third part is to produce a final copy of these tweets that is significantly better than the original.
