Unit 6 Discussion The biosocial system's principle that “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts” is important to consider when looking at family resilience because it stresses the fact that when the whole system is working together it can be stronger than the individuals working alone. Family resilience works similarly in this way in that the entire family can function better when they utilize their strengths to overcome the challenges they face. This can impact the type of services delivered by the human services professional because if the family is not cohesive when it comes to adhering to the goals and referrals made, it can be difficult for them to move forward and progress. The RPM3 model stands for Responding, Preventing, Monitoring, Mentoring, and Modeling. This model offers research-based guidelines that can help parents make daily decisions in their parenting (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, & Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, n.d.). Modeling, mentoring, and monitoring are all important when developing family resilience. Modeling is important because this is one of the examples given to children as they age and develop. As a parent, modeling positive behavior and attitudes in challenging situations can help children model the same resilience and behavior as they grow older. Mentoring is important as this helps to support and encourage desired behaviors (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, & Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, n.d.). In terms of resilience, mentoring can help to enhance strengths and lessen weaknesses. Monitoring is important because it can help to reduce negative behaviors and attitudes in children and adolescents. Monitoring
