2 Introduction Assessing the needs of our clients is one of the vital tasks a human services professional has to do. It helps to ensure that our clients are able to get the help that they need to recover or move forward from their challenges. These challenges can occur at any point in time and affect families from many walks of life. As a human services professional, it is important to be able to determine the best course of action to address these needs so the families can strive to achieve balance and success. This paper will discuss two unmet needs faced by families, long-term and short-term goals that can be implemented to assist in meeting or solving their needs, as well as discuss two interventions that can assist the families with meeting said goals. Unmet Family Needs Two unmet needs or problems that I found to be faced by families are unemployment and mental health issues. The unemployment rate in the U.S. reached the highest it has ever been since the Great Depression at 14.7% in 2020 (Purdy, 2021). A person is considered to be unemployed when they do not currently have a job, but are actively seeking one (Purdy, 2021). This can be caused by many reasons. Whether it is due to businesses shutting down, low education status, or conviction history, unemployment can negatively affect both individuals and families. Unemployment can lead to a range of issues within a family, especially financial hardship. Studies have found that financial hardships can affect both family functioning and child development (Paat, 2011). Mental health is another unmet need that I found to be faced by families. Mental health issues can range from depression, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia, and more. There is already a stigma against those who experience mental illness (Reupert et al, 2021). For families with
3 members who are experiencing mental health issues, it can be difficult for some to remain functional and balanced. The risk factors associated with mental health issues within families include poverty and genetic vulnerability (Reupert et al, 2021). Goals Goals help guide the client to move forward in the process of meeting their needs. With the needs mentioned above, it is important to develop attainable goals, so that the families are more successful in meeting them. When it comes to unemployment, a short-term goal for the family would be for the parent(s) or caretaker(s) to obtain a job. Obtaining employment would be a quick solution to the caretakers' unemployment status, even if it would take some time. A long- term goal could be to remain employed with a job for at least 90 days. Maintaining employment with a job for 90 days could help with many other difficulties the family might have been facing during their unemployment such as catching up on bills, obtaining food and groceries, as well as working on stability. For mental health, a short-term goal could be to develop a self-care plan. Self-care plans and routines are important, especially for mental health. Self-care plans can help you think about the people, programs, and activities in your support network that can help you deal with mental health challenges (Ahmad, 2023). A long-term goal for mental health problems could be to learn how to better manage their mental illness symptoms. Interventions Two interventions that could be implemented to help a family meet their goals are case management and applying to staffing agencies. Staffing agencies provide a bridge to employment for those who are unemployed (Smith & Neuwirth, 2008). Even with being

4 employed with a staffing agency, there is still an opportunity to become permanently employed. Usually with temp-to-perm employment opportunities, there are qualifications that need to be met in order to remain permanent with the company which usually involve remaining employed for a specific amount of time. Case management could also help families get connected to resources and provide follow-ups (AHC Media, 2020). This is beneficial in managing mental health because it provides an added support system. It is also important because case management takes the whole person or family into account (Summers, 2015). These interventions can lead to long-term success of a family because they both link the families to resources that could help benefit the family. Employment and case management provide monetary and social support which would help the family to stabilize in the long run. Conclusion In conclusion, assessing the needs of our clients and being able to provide the proper interventions and resources could help with the long-term success of families at risk. Two unmet needs that were discussed in this paper were unemployment and mental health issues. With these unmet needs, it is essential to be able to provide the families with long-term and short-term goals that could be implemented to help them meet their needs. The interventions that were mentioned included case management and staffing agencies. Both of these interventions aid the families in working to resolve those unmet needs with support rather than the families enduring their challenges alone.
