Religious symbolism in TV commercials. Gonzaga University professors conducted a study of television commercials and published their results in the Journal of Sociology Social Work and Social Welfare (Vol. 2, 2008). The key research question was as follows: “Do television advertisers use religious symbolism to sell goods and services?” In a sample of 797 TV commercials collected ten years earlier, only 16 commercials used religious symbolism. Of the sample of 1,499 TV commercials examined in the more recent study, 51 commercials used religious symbolism. Conduct an analysis to determine if the percentage of TV commercials that use religious symbolism has changed over time. If you detect a change, estimate the magnitude of the difference and attach a measure of reliability to the estimate.

The check teeth of an extinct primate species was the subject of research reported in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology (Vol. 142, 2010). A total of 18 check teeth extracted from skulls discovered in western Wyoming were analyzed. Each tooth was classified according to degree of wear (unworn, slight, light-moderate, moderate, moderate-heavy, or heavy). The 18 measurements are listed here. Data on Degree of Wear Unknown Slight Unknown Slight Unknown Heavy Moderate Unknown Slight Light-moderate Unknown Light-moderate Moderate-heavy Moderate Moderate Unworn Slight Unknown Identify the variable measured in the study and its type (qualitative and quantitative) Form frequency distribution. - A report included data from a study in which 789 people in a representative sample of college students age 18 to 24 were asked how they perceive their money management skills. Possible responses were excellent, good, average, not very good, and poor. Each student in the sample was also classified by sex, resulting in the data in the table. - In a study of violent victimization of women and men, Porcerelli et al. (A-2) collected information from 679 women and 345 men aged 18 to 64 years at several family practice centers in the metropolitan Detroit area. Patients filled out a health history questionnaire that included a question about victimization. The following table shows the sample subjects cross-classified by sex and the type of violent victimization reported. The victimization categories are defined as no victimization, partner victimization (and not by others), victimization by persons other than partners (friends, family members, or strangers), and those who reported multiple victimization. Fifty women who suffered miscarriage were enrolled in the study along with 50 women who delivered full-term infants. Each participant’s use of alcohol during their first trimester of pregnancy was ascertained by face-to-face interview. For the purpose of this study, heavy alcohol use was defined as consuming four or more drinks on any one occasion during the first trimester of pregnancy. Study results found that a total of 18 women were heavy alcohol users, 14 among those who suffered a miscarriage. 1) What type of study design was used? Explain. 2) Set up the 2X2 contingency table for the data. 3) For this type of study design, what is the appropriate measure to describe the strength of the association between exposure and disease? 4) Calculate the measure identified in question 3. 5) Interpret the measure calculated in question 4. - Hamilton County Judges Reporter Kristen DelGuzzi of The Cincinnati Enquirer is writing a piece about the effectiveness of judges in Hamilton County, Ohio. In an overwhelming majority of the cases disposed, the verdict stands as rendered. However, some cases are appealed, and of those appealed, some of the cases are reversed. Over a three-year period the Hamilton County Common Pleas Court, Domestic Relations Court, and Municipal Court handled 182,908 cases. The purpose of the newspaper's study is to evaluate the performance of each court and the judges who render their decisions. Appeals are often the result of mistakes made by judges, and the newspaper wanted to know which court and which judges were doing a good job and which were making too many mistakes. You have been hired to assist in the data analysis at the court level (judge-level analysis will be done at a later time).
