Alcoholic fermentation in wines. Determining alcoholic fermentation in wine is critical to the wine-making process. Must/wine density is a good indicator of the fermentation point because the density value decreases as sugars are converted into alcohol. For decades, winemakers have measured must/wine density with a hydrometer. Although accurate, the hydrometer employs a manual process that is very time-consuming. Consequently, large wineries are searching for more rapid measures of density measurement. An alternative method uses the hydrostatic balance instrument (similar to the hydrometer but digital). A winery in Portugal collected the must/wine density measurements for white wine samples randomly selected from the fermentation process for a recent harvest. For each sample, the density of the wine at 20°C was measured with both the hydrometer and the hydrostat balance. The densities for 40 wine samples are saved in the file. The first five and last five observations are shown in the table (next page). The winery will use the alternative method of measuring wine density only if it can be demonstrated that the

- A group of researchers studied the effect of acid rain on wildlife and collected n = 12 samples from streams in different States. They recorded the pH (X) of the water (i.e. units above pH 7), and the BCI, a measure of biological diversity (Y). The data obtained is summarized below. The ability to estimate the volume of a tree based on a simple measurement, such as the diameter of the tree, is important to the lumber industry, ecologists, and conservationists. Data on volume, in cubic feet, and diameter at breast height, in inches, for 70 shortleaf pines was reported in C. Bruce and F. X. Schumacher’s Forest Mensuration (New York: McGraw-Hill, 1935) and analyzed by A. C. Akinson in the article “Transforming Both Sides of a Tree” (The American Statistician, Vol. 48, pp. 307–312). The data are provided on the WeissStats site. a. obtain and interpret the standard error of the estimate. b. obtain a residual plot and a normal probability plot of the residuals. c. decide whether you can reasonably consider Assumptions 1–3 for regression inferences met by the two variables under consideration.arrow_forwardA sociologist wants to determine if the life expectancy of people in Africa is less than the life expectancy of people in Asia. The ecologist captured male birds, measured their wing span and other characteristics in millimeters, and then marked and released them. During the ensuing winter, the ecologist repeatedly observed the marked birds as they foraged for food on tree branches. He noted the branch diameter on each occasion, and calculated the average branch diameter for each bird in centimeters. The measurement data are below. The intensity of the color is directly related to the quantity of DNA present in the cell. A haploid cell would have a “low” amount of color, a cell in G1 would have a “medium” amount of color, and a cell in M phase would have a “high” amount of color. Is this sort of assessment quantitative, qualitative or semi-quantitative? Justify your reasoning.arrow_forwardpan's high population density has resulted in a multitude of resource-usage problems.
