Chapter 8, Problem 8.107ACB
Smartphone usage differs by gender. The role of the smartphone in modern life was investigated by a Compete Pulse (November 2011) survey. A total of 251 male and 284 female smartphone users were interviewed in the sample. One of the objectives was to compare male and female smartphone users. For example, 48% of men conduct financial transactions on their phone, as compared to 60% of women. Also, 42% of men watch streaming content (movies/TV) on their phone, as compared to 35% of women.
- a. Describe the two populations of interest in the survey.
- b. Give an estimate of the proportion of men and the proportion of women who conduct financial transactions on a smartphone.
- c. Find a 90% confidence interval for the difference between the proportions of men and women who conduct financial transactions on a smartphone.
- d. From your answer to part c, can you conclude that men are less likely than women to conduct financial transactions on a smartphone? Explain.
- e. Give an estimate of the proportion of men and the proportion of women who watch streaming content on their smartphone.
- f. Conduct a test to determine whether the proportions of men and women who watch streaming content on their phone differ. Use α = .10.

Resorts & Spas, a magazine devoted to upscale vacations and accommodations, published its Reader's Choice List of the top 20 independent beachfront boutique hotels in the world. The data shown are the scores received by these hotels based on the results from Resorts & Spas' annual Readers' Choice Survey. Each score represents the percentage of respondents who rated a hotel as excellent or very good on one of three criteria (comfort, amenities, and in-house dining). An overall score was also reported and used to rank the hotels. The highest ranked hotel, the Muri Beach Odyssey, has an overall score of 94.3, the highest component of which is 97.7 for in-house dining. If required, round your answer to three decimal places.

The Bureau of Transportation reports on-time performance for airlines at major airports.
JetBlue, United, and US Airways share Terminal C and Boston's Logan Airport. The percentage of on-time flights reported for a sample month were 76.8% for JetBlue, 71.5% for United, and 82.2% for US Airways. Assume that 30% of the arriving flights at this terminal are JetBlue flights, 32% are United flights, and 38% are US Airways flights.
a. Develop a contingency table (table of joint probabilities and marginal probabilities).
b. An announcement is made that Flight 1382 will arrive at Terminal C. What is the probability that the flight will arrive on time?
c. Flight 1382 arrives on time. What is the probability that Flight 1382 is operated by US Airways?

A sample of 30 four-year-old children from a local preschool was used in the study. Sugar consumption was measured by interviewing the parents about each child’s diet. Based on the result of the interview, each child was then placed into one of two groups: high sugar consumption and low sugar consumption. Activity level was measured by observing the children during a regular preschool afternoon. Finally, Dr. Jones compared the activity level for the high-sugar group with the activity level for the low-sugar group.
