Interpretation:
The ion with largest and smallest radius from magnesium, calcium and barium ion needs to be determined. The periodic trend of ionic radius needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
A periodic table consists of groups and periods. The horizontal rows are termed as periods and the vertical rows are termed as groups. The elements with similar properties are placed together in a group.
Answer to Problem 60A
Barium has the largest ionic radius and magnesium has the smallest ionic radius.
Explanation of Solution
On moving down a group, the atomic and the ionic radius of the element increases. Due to the increase in the principle energy and the addition of shells, the radius increases.
Since, magnesium, calcium and barium belongs to same group thus, magnesium will have the smallest ionic radius while Barium the largest because on moving top to bottom the arrangement of these elements is such that magnesium is at the top and barium is at the bottom.
On moving down the group, the ionic radius increases, therefore, barium will have the largest ionic radius and magnesium will have the smallest ionic radius.
