Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for some of the periods having different numbers of elements needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
A periodic table consist of groups and periods. The horizontal rows are termed as groups and the vertical rows are termed as periods. The elements with similar properties are placed together in a group.
Answer to Problem 50A
Some periods do not have same number of elements because, the number of orbitals containing electrons increases as the principal energy level increases.
Explanation of Solution
The number of elements in a period varies by the number of electrons it contains in each of their orbitals. The number of orbitals containing electrons increases as the principal energy level increases. Due to this, some periods do not have same number of elements.
For example, Period 1 has 2 elements, Period 2 has 8, Period 3 has 8, Period 4 has 18 etc.
The number of orbitals containing electrons increases as the principal energy level increases. Due to this, some periods do not have same number of elements.
