If a new halogen and a new noble gas were discovered, their
Concept introduction:
Halogens are the elements present in group 17 of the periodic table. Some examples of halogens are fluorine, chlorine, bromine etc. Noble gases are the elements present in group 18 of the periodic table. Some noble gases are helium, neon, argon etc. These noble gases are inert in nature.
Answer to Problem 36A
The atomic number of halogen would be 117 and the atomic number of noble gas is 118.
Explanation of Solution
The noble gases are one group away from halogens. The halogens are found in group 17 and noble gases are found in group 18. The atomic number of halogen can be determined by adding 32 to the atomic number of ‘At’ (Atomic number 85), which is lastly discovered halogen. So, the newly found halogen would have atomic number 117 (85+32) and the noble gas has the atomic number 118.
The atomic number of the newly found halogen and noble gas is differed by 1.
