Concept explainers
Interpretation:
A concept map needs to be prepared by explaining the concepts in sections 5-4, 5-5 and 5-6.
Concept introduction:
The net ionic equation is the reaction which shows only chemical ions or species that are actually reacting in the reaction.
These ions react to produce desired product in the reaction which may also include spectator ion or ions which are repeating in the reaction.
The spectator ions are not present in the net ionic equation.
A redox reaction is the reaction which consists of reactant in which one reactant gets oxidized and another reactant gets reduced.
On losing electron/s by reactant, it gets positively charged/negative charge decreases and undergoes oxidation. On the other hand, when a reactant gain electron/s, it undergoes reduction and gets negatively charged/positive charge decreases on it.

- Lead poisoning has been a hazard for centuries. Some scholars believe that the decline of the Roman Empire can be traced, in part, to high levels of lead in water from containers and pipes, and from wine that was stored in leadglazed containers. If we presume that the typical Roman water supply was saturated with lead carbonate, PbCO3 (Ksp = 7.4 1014), how much lead will a Roman ingest in a year if he or she drinks 1 L/day from the container?arrow_forwardIn a common medical laboratory determination of the concentration of free chloride ion in blood serum, a serum sample is titrated with a Hg( NO3)2 solution. 2Cl(aq)+Hg( NO3)2(aq)2NO3(aq)+HgCl2(s) What is the CF concentration in a 0.25-mL sample of normal serum that requires 1.46 mL of 8.25104M Hg( HO3)2(aq) to reach the end point?arrow_forwardYou need to make a 0.300-M solution of NiSO4(aq). Calculate the mass of NiSO4 · 6H2O you should put into a 0.500-L volumetric flask.arrow_forward
- 4-33 When a solution of hydrochloric acid, HCl, is added to a solution of sodium sulfite, Na.2S03, sulfur dioxide gas is released from the solution. Write a net ionic equation for this reaction. An aqueous solution of HCl contains H+ and Cl- ions, and Na2SO3 exists as dissociated ions in aqueous solution.arrow_forwardCalcium carbonate, CaCO3, can be obtained in a very pure state. Standard solutions of calcium ion are usually prepared by dissolving calcium carbonate in acid. What mass of CaCO3 should be taken to prepare 500. mL of 0.0200 M calcium ion solution?arrow_forwardAssuming that circles represent cations and squares represent anions, match the incomplete net ionic equations to their pictorial representations. - Magnesium metal (a component of alloys used in aircraft and a reducing agent used in the production of uranium, titanium, and other active metals) is isolated from sea water by the following sequence of reactions: Mg2+(aq)+Ca(OH)2(aq)Mg(OH)2(s)+Ca2+(aq)Mg(OH)2(s)+2HCl(aq)MgCl2(s)+2H2O(l)MgCl2(l)electrolysisMg(s)+Cl2+Cl2(g) Sea water has a density of 1.026 g/cm3 and contains 1272 parts per million of magnesium a5 Mg2+(aq) by mass. What mass, in kilograms, of Ca(OH)2; is required to precipitate 99.9% of the magnesium in 1.00103 L of sea water?arrow_forwardWrite a net ionic equation for any precipitation reaction that occurs when 1 M solutions of the following are mixed. (a) copper(II) sulfate and sodium chloride (b) manganese(II) nitrate and ammonium hydroxide (c) silver nitrate and hydrochloric acid (d) nickel(II) sulfate and potassium hydroxide (e) ammonium carbonate and sodium nitratearrow_forward68. Aluminum ion may be precipitated from aqueous solution by addition of hydroxide ion, forming Al(OH)3. A large excess of hydroxide ion must not be added, however, because the precipitate of Al(OH)3 will redissolve as a soluble compound containing aluminum ions and hydroxide ions begins to form. How many grains of solid NaOH should be added to 10.0 mL of 0.250 M A1Cl3 to just precipitate all the aluminum?arrow_forward
- 42. a. Fill in the following table as if it is a well plate and you are mixing two aqueous compounds at a time to see if a precipitate forms. If a precipitate is expected to form, indicate that by writing the correct formula for the precipitate in the corresponding box in the table. If no precipitate is expected to form, write “NO” in the box. CaCI2 Pb(NO3)2 (NH4)3PO4 Na2CO3 AgNO3 K2SO4 b. How do you prepare 300.0 mL of a 0.250 M CaCl2 solution using an available 2(X) M solution? Support your answer with calculations, but also make sure you describe how to prepare the solution.arrow_forwardA sample of solid calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, is allowed to stand in water until a saturated solution is formed. A titration of 75.00 mL of this solution with 5.00102M HCl requires 36.6 mL of the acid to reach the end point. Ca(OH)2(aq)+2HCl(aq)CaCl2(aq)+2H2O(l) What is the molarity?arrow_forwardA student tries to determine experimentally the molar mass of aspirin (HAsp).
