The rotation of the armature is harder because when it is connected to the circuit and supplying the electric current then in that case, the armature has to work in the magnetic field produced by a current-carrying coil.
As the current increases in the circuit, the opposition decreases, and the amount of work done also increases to spin the armature. The work done in rotating the armature goes into the electrical energy supplied to the external circuit.
