Concept explainers
Why can a hum often be heard when a transformer is operating?
To Explain: The reason for hearing hum sound during the working of a transformer.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
A transformer is a device used for increasing or decreasing the voltage through electromagnetic induction.
Due to alternating current, the magnetic flux in the transformer will keep reversing or alternating its polarities. Hence, in the core of the transformer, the vibrations producing the same frequency by the iron slabs which can be heard as a humming noise.
Conclusion:
The humming noise is heard due to vibrations caused in the core of the transformer.
