Concept explainers
What is the basic difference between an electric generator and an electric motor?
To explain: the difference between electric motor and electric generator.
Answer to Problem 29A
The electric motor converts the electrical energy not mechanical energy and the electric generator converts the mechanical energy into the electrical energy.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
The electric motor and electric generator are used to convert one form of energy into another form of energy to do useful work.
The electric motor is a device which convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. It works on the principle that the current carrying conductor that experiences a force when it is kept on magnetic field. It follows Flaming’s right hand rule.
The electric generator is a device which convert mechanical energy into the electrical energy. It works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. It follows Fleming’s left hand rule.
Conclusion:
The alternating current (AC) produces induced voltage and the light bulb gets lit.
