Interpretation:
The number of tritium atoms are incorporated in acetate if a molecule of palmitic acid is oxidized in 100% tritiated water should be discussed.
Concept Introduction:
ß oxidation of saturated fatty acids undergo via a recurring cycle of four steps. In the first step bond between alpha and beta carbon of fatty acyl-CoA is oxidized to a double bond, followed by hydration and another oxidation step. The ß-Ketoacyl-CoA formed after third step is cleaved in a reverse Claisen condensation, producing an acetate unit and a fatty acid chain that lacks two carbons than it began. These fatty acid chains are again subjected to the successive cycles.
