Chapter 21, Problem 110E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The base which is replaced in the codon for glu in DNA to give the codon for Val is to be stated.

Concept introduction: A codon is defined as a sequence of three adjacent nucleotides which constitutes the genetic code that specifies the insertion of amino acid in a polypeptide chain. In sickle-cell disease, hemoglobin S is found and a codon for glutamic acid is converted to a codon for valine. It is a type of anemia in which oxygen is in short supply and all the red blood cells become sickle-shaped. Hence, it is known as sickle-cell anemia.

To determine: The base which is replaced in the codon for glu in DNA to give the codon for Val.
