Answer to Problem 5Q
Will a magnet attract any metallic object such as those made of aluminum or copper? Why is this so?
Solution:
Explanation of Solution
A magnet does not attract any metallic object magnet attracts ferromagnetic substance, it does not attract diamagnetic and very weakly interact with paramagnetic substance. Ferromagnetic substance contains large number of magnetic domain. Due to which magnet interact with ferromagnetic. But aluminum or copper is don’t ferromagnetic.
Introduction:
On the basis of magnetic behavior. Substance is classified into three part
- Ferromagnetic
- Paramagnetic
- Diamagnetic
(a)Ferromagnetic:
This is strongly attract by magnet. Ferromagnetic substance is generally made up of iron steel, eobal and their some alloys.
Inside the ferromagnetic substance domain exist. Due to which it strong interact with magnet.
(b)Paramagnetic:
The substance is made up of that atom, which contains electron, this unpaired Electron from magnetic moments, these magnetic moment is randomly alighted. So it very weakly interact with magnet. It does not contain domain
EX: |
(c) Diamagnetic:
This substance is made is up of that atom which contains only paired electron. There is no magnetic dipoles in the absence of a magnetic field. When this substance is placed in magnetic field dipole moment will developed opposite to magnetic field.
All metal does not interact with magnet. Ferromagnetic substance strongly attract with magnet like iron cobalt, Nickel, Due to formation of domain
Like Aluminum, copper etc. has unpaired electron which form magnetic moment, but it is aligned in random direction Net magnetic moment is zero, due to cancellation.
Random aligned of magnetic moment due to unpaired electron.
Conclusion:
All metallic object does not interact with magnet like aluminum or copper.
