Answer to Problem 4RQ

The nuclear decay reactions are spontaneous and do not require any outside influence to proceed. In nuclear decay reactions a stable final product is formed.

On the other hand, nuclear transformation reactions proceed with outside influence and are induced artificially. In nuclear transformation reactions, the final product has more mass than that of the reactants.

Explanation of Solution

Nuclear decay reactions happen due to an element possessing an unstable radioactive nucleus which undergoes several types of decays until it becomes a stable product.

The nuclear transformation reactions are started by striking a reactant nucleus with high powered subatomic particles which fuse with the nucleus to form a more massive product which can be more or less stable.
