Concept explainers
Interpretation: Melt-down needs to be explained. Whether steam explosion can occur in nuclear reactor or not needs to be explained.
Concept introduction: Because of the emission of large energy nuclear fission is known to be an energy source in reactors where controlled fission can occur. The resulting energy is used to heat water to produce steam that runs turbine which in turn runs the electric generator.
Answer to Problem 41A
Steam explosion can occur due to overeating of reactor core.
Explanation of Solution
Melt-down can be defined as accidental melting of the core of a nuclear reactor. When failure of cooling system occurs heat generated by a nuclear reactor exceeds the heat removed by the cooling systems. As a result temperatures rises enough to melt the reactor core.
On overheating a light water nuclear reactor core, the hot molten materials may increase the water’s temperature which results in steam explosion that damages the containment structure.
Steam explosion can occur due to overeating of reactor core.
