Concept explainers
Interpretation: Whether a nuclear explosion can occur or not is to be explained. Also, whether the concentration of fissionable material enough to cause nuclear explosion or not is to be explained.
Concept introduction:Because of the emission oflarge energy nuclear fission is known to be an energy source required to produce electricity in reactors. In these reactors, controlled fission can take place. The energy released can be used to heat water to produce steam that runs turbine which in turn runs the electric generator.
Answer to Problem 40A
Explosion cannot occur in nuclear reactor. Concentration of fissionable material is not high enough to cause nuclear explosion.
Explanation of Solution
In nuclear reactor fission reactions are controlled. Control rods (made up of cadmium, boron and hafnium) are placed in nuclear reactor which absorbs neutron and thus reduces the chance of uncontrolled chain reaction which can cause explosion. Again, the concentration of
Explosion cannot occur in nuclear reactor. Concentration of fissionable material is not high enough to cause nuclear explosion.
