Rules of common name:

  • Identify and name the two alkyl groups bonded to the sp3 hybridized oxygen atom in alphabetical order.
  • Finally, add the word ether at the end of the alkyl group’s names.

IUPAC rules for naming ethers:

  • Identify the parent carbon chain in the given compound. If two or more chains have the same carbon lengths, choose the chain with a greater number of substituents bonded to it. Name the parent carbon chain,
  • The other alkyl group is named by replacing the -yl ending of that alkyl group to -oxy. The final name looks like “alkoxy”.
  • Arrange the both names, the alkoxy name first followed by the parent compound’s name as alkoxyalkane.
